The Breastfeeding Cafe is a collection of stories from a very diverse cast of women. Author Barbara L. Behrmann, PhD, interviewed women across the country about their own unique breastfeeding and birthing experiences. Some women interviewed nursed for very short periods of time while others nursed their children for years. The author discusses how and why we should create a culture in which breastfeeding not bottlefeeding is visible and valued by all. The book contains nine carefully constructed chapters and a handy and informational Breastfeeding Resource Appendix. Throughout the book the author examines relevant issues and questions that affect breastfeeding relationships from many different perspectives. Inlcuded are; Does a woman’s birth experience affect her ability to breastfeed? How do hospital-based procedures and policies undermine breastfeeding? How do women deal with a baby who wants to nurse constantly or who is too sleepy to nurse? What are the struggles women experience as nursing mothers in the work force? How do women manage the mixed messages they receive about their breasts? How does nursing affect women’s sexuality and intimacy? Why do some women breastfeed for short periods of time and other until their children are in preschool? Pregnant women and nursing mothers alike will find community, laughter, and empowerment from this well written text. |
