Alcohol is not indicated for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. However, many mothers who have an occasional glass of wine at a wedding or dinner party now have a tool to assess their breastmilk.  Milkscreen developed by two nursing mothers, gives a peace of mind for breastfeeding mothers who indulge in the the occasional alcoholic drink.  Every mother metabolizes alcohol differently, so it is important to test your breastmilk before feeding your baby if there is any question of the lingering presence of any amount of alcohol.  A positive result with Milkscreen indicates alcohol exists in the milk and you may want to seek an alternate source of food for your baby. With a positive test result, options include waiting for an hour or so and then re-testing your milk, or using stored, pre-pumped breastmilk.
