The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released The Breastfeeding Report Card which includes state breastfeeding statistics from the National Immunization Survey, and new statistics for each individual state. Each states is reviewed including; the number of infants born in a Baby-Friendly Hospitals, the number of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants per 1,000 live births, the number of full-time equivalent employees working on breastfeeding in the state public health department, the number of La Leche League groups per 1,000 live births, presence of a statewide breastfeeding coalition (with and without a website) and sate specific breastfeeding legislation.

The CDC reports that there has also been a change the way breastfeeding data is reported on the National Immunization Survey. Now, breastfeeding rates are reported by birth cohort. Breastfeeding rates are reported for children born in the year 2004 but are reported in the 2007 data. Due to these reporting changes many states whose breastfeeding rates appeared to improve on previous NIS survey now may appear lower. These numbers can be a bit confusing and are an indication of the new reporting process, not a improvement in breastfeeding rates. The states with the highest reported rates for breastfeeding at 6 and 12 months included; Alaska, California, Hawaii, Maine., Montana, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. See where your state ranks in statistics for breastfeeding.
