Mothering Magazine recently held a contest to design the International Breastfeeding Symbol. Graphic designer Matt Daigle of Sioux Falls, SD was voted the winning designer out of a field of 500 entrants and 12 finalists. “The purpose of an international symbol for breastfeeding is to increase public awareness of breastfeeding, to provide an alternative to the use of a baby bottle image to designate baby friendly areas in public, and to mark breastfeeding friendly facilities”. The design, which is representative of a child nursing at it’s mothers breast, will be used to indicate specified baby friendly nursing areas in public, and to mark breastfeeding friendly facilities in general. The blue and white icon is easily recognizable and was designed to match other well known international icons for bathroom, handicapped accessible, telephone booths and information desks ect. “The purpose of the symbol is not to segregate breastfeeding, but to help integrate it into society by better accommodating it in public”.
