Read at least two of the recommended books regarding breastfeeding before you give birth. Connect with other breastfeeding mothers while you are pregnant. Attend a local La Leche League meeting in your community. Seek out like-minded nursing mothers that are friends or family members who have had good experiences breastfeeding. Hang out with a breastfeeding friend for a while or visit a La Leche League meeting and see nursing moms with breastfeeding children of varying ages. Take a local breastfeeding class form a trained lactation professional . A professional such as a C.L.E.C. (certified lactation educator counselor) can be an excellent resources and asset to your breastfeeding relationship. Enlist the positive support and guidance from family and friends. Contact a local lactation consultant . Consider hiring a labor doula. Consider hiring a postpartum doula. Create a birth plan. Create a breastfeeding crib card for you baby. Choose a pediatrician who is supportive of breastfeeding. Locate your local breastfeeding supply store. Make sure they have a good stock of bras, nursing tops, breatfeeding and pumping accessories and that they have access to hospital grade pump rental or referrals. There are also many online retailers that carry everything you need to breastfeed.
