Selecting a nursing bra is a important part of the breastfeeding experience. Purchasing a supportive yet comfortable fitting nursing bra is different expereince from buying a regular bra.  There are numerous changes that happen to the breasts during pregnancy and postpartum period. When choosing a nursing bra use these tips to help select the bra that best meets your individual needs:

Shop for a maternity/nursing bra during the final weeks of your pregnancy, because your breasts are continually changing as you near your due date. Doing so will ensure you select one that will fit adequately after your baby is born.

Avoid trying to find a bra with too much room for breast growth. You may have to choose a bra that fits well now, knowing that you may need to change to another size later on. Breast typically change shape a few time in the pregnancy first three-six months and then again between 6-12 months.

It is generally recommend buying about five nursing bras, so you can have a fresh, clean breastfeeding bra each day.

The best choices to prevent infections, thrush, yeasts, plugged ducts are white, mostly cotton bras with no obvious seems across the breast or nipple or under wire. These should be a cotton blend with an all cotton lined cups may not work for everyone and there are so many choices now in breastfeeding bras.  There are many bras online and in local breastfeeding shops that are fashionable as well as comfortable.

You may want to choose a wide, cushioned, non-stretch shoulder strap to provide the most support possible without digging into your shoulders.

You may want to buy a few less cumbersome nursing bras for sleeping and nighttime as well. Underwire bras are generally not recommend for sleeping. Make sure your night time bras is very comfortable with easy open flaps. These flap stylenursing bras are made so they can easily be pulled to one side with one hand.

Always buy a nursing bra that you feel gives plenty of support.

A three to four station back closure will offer comfort as well as the most flexibility in fit and breast size changes.

If you find your nursing bra is too tight or you are in between sizes you may want to consider purchasing bra extenders.

When you are trying on the new bra attempt to unhook or unflap the bra and check for easy one handed access. These opening should be easily unsnapped or unlatched to allow easier access nursing.

Select a bra that allows for enough skin-to-skin contact for comfort when you nurse your baby.

Make sure you wash nursing bras after one wear in hot water with a cup of white vinegar. Wash all nursing bras together in one small load and dry in dryer with heat. (these recommendations are best for cotton and mostly cotton bras not lace polyester or ornate bras etc.)

Purchase at least 6 sets of cotton washable nursing pads or one box of disposable pads with a cotton breathable layer.

If you are large breasted in nature, or goddess size you may want to seriously consider going into the local breastfeeding supply store for a personal fit. Fit is essential to comfort and support.
