* Check your latch--When your baby is latched on correctly and nursing actively, getting milk from your breast and swallowing, it is physically impossible to bite.

* As soon as you notice a change in latch on, slip your clean finger into the corner of your baby's mouth and detach.

* Baby's position is very important to effectively breastfeeding and reducing poor latch and biting or nipping. Many mothers have found useful is to pull baby in closer to the breast and place his body closer to you. When you begin to notice your baby begins positioning himself away from your breast and nipple, be aware for a possible bite in progress.

* Assess the baby for any breathing issues. A stuffy nose can create issues for the breastfeeding baby and may cause biting due to frustration.

*Always maintain a good milk supply. If baby is biting and nursing less and less during this period, try to pump for each nursing session missed. Stored milk can always be used for later uses.

*Consult with an IBCLC if you feel that the biting is seriously beginning to compromise the breastfeeding relationship.
