As the public gains greater recognition and respect for the value of breastfeeding babies, more states will enact laws to protect the breastfeeding relationship. Unfortunately in recent years only a few states had passed laws exempting breastfeeding mothers from serving jury duty.

Twelve states currently exempt breastfeeding mothers from jury duty they include California, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia.

La Leche League recommends calling a local LLL leader in your area for assistance if you are a nursing mother called for jury duty.

What you can do to protect, promote, and support the breastfeeding relationship of mothers called for jury duty.

This is a copy of a letter that you can print sign and send to you local senator or representative.

Educate the court or judge about the importance of breastfeeding.

Contact your local and federal legislators, and let them know that you believe nursing mothers should have the right to feed their children how and where they need to.
